Greg Couzens, owner of Couzens Hair Salon on The Walk, has been working with local photographer Malcolm Journeaux using local landmarks for fashion model photography to help promote the town.

On Sunday (14 January), they teamed up with Xara Taylor, a fashion design student and model, and Sonara Parker (make up artist), for a photo shoot at the Council’s Number One Riverside building in Rochdale town centre.

Malcolm said: “I have been working on a series of model photos using local landmark locations, previously the Town Hall, The Shippon at Ogden, The Empire in Rochdale town centre, Hollingworth Lake, and now Number One Riverside.

“The building makes a superb backdrop of stunning architecture, with bold angles and sweeping curves.”

Greg said: “It was great to be part of such a successful team, promoting what I believe to be a magnificent building.

“I really do urge people who have not been to the building before to go and see it.

“It is fantastic because we are not only promoting the fashion and hair point of view, we are also promoting this great building that we have in Rochdale.”

Mark Widdup, Executive Director of the Council, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Malcolm into Number One Riverside to carry out his photo shoot.

“It was a great opportunity to showcase our stunning building and to allow a wider audience to appreciate the quality of the design.

“Number One Riverside has been a catalyst for the wider regeneration of Rochdale town centre and provides high quality facilities to residents and visitors to the Borough.”

Xara, who is a fashion design student at Manchester Metropolitan University, was introduced to Malcolm two years ago when she filled in for a model at a previous shoot. The pair made a great team and have collaborated together since.

Malcolm even designed the red fishtail style and the black lace dresses that Xara made and wore for the shoot on Sunday.

When asked about what inspired her to be a fashion student, Xara commented: “My mum always had a sewing machine and that is when my passion for fashion design really began. I was only 11-years-old when I made my first dress and I was so proud to say that I had created it myself.

“I am just so driven and ambitious to use this degree to continue as a fashion designer.

“I am learning how to do things more at industry level and standard every day, whilst still maintaining the originality in my designs.

“Being at the Riverside will boost my confidence further in designing my own garments because this dress has decided everything else that happens today. We would not have a set idea on how to have my make-up and hair if it wasn’t for the style and colour of my dress - it all really revolves around the outfit.”

Award winning make up artist Sonara, who was delighted to team up with Malcolm again nine years after their epic seven photo shoots in seven days in Jersey, loved Number One Riverside, she said: "It is an amazing building and great as a location for a fashion shoot."
